                         OLD PRINTER IS DEAD

Former Compositor On The Commercial Passes Away
   June 11, 1908

John Leonard, 72, one of the oldest printers in the county, died in his residence,
811 Hathaway street,  Cincinnati, yesterday afternoon. For years he had been
a sufferer from Bright's disease but continued at his trade until last Saturday
when he was forced to take to his bed. Mr. Leonard was a compositor on the old
Gazette for twenty three years, and after its consolidation with the Commercial
he remained twelve more years in the newspaper business there.

He left the Commercial about ten years ago and went to work for the
Globe-Wernecke Company, at the time of his death being an employee in the
printing
shop in the eighth street plant of that concern.

The decedent is survived by his wife.

He was an Odd Fellow, and that fraternity will have charge of the funeral
services at his
residence at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be
in the Spring Grove Cemetery.

  DEATH OF A FORMER BATAVIAN

John W Leonard, formerly of this place died at his home in
Cincinnati on Thursday June 11, 1908 in the 72d year of his age,
He learned type-setting in this office about 1853, and went

to Cincinnati in 1855, where he secured employment on the
Gazette, on which paper he worked until it was merged with
the Commercial, continuing with the new firm making a
continuous service of more than forty years.

He was noted for his steadiness and reliability as well as for his
skill as a workman. He was a brother of the late James
Leonard, of this place and was held in high esteem by our
older citizens, and all who knew him. He leaves a widow and a
considerable relationship. His friends from Batavia attended his
funeral which took place in Cincinnati last Thursday. Interment
was in Spring Grove Cemetery.
