Former Compositor On The Commercial Passes Away June 11, 1908 John Leonard, 72, one of the oldest printers in the county, died in his residence, 811 Hathaway street, Cincinnati, yesterday afternoon. For years he had been a sufferer from Bright's disease but continued at his trade until last Saturday when he was forced to take to his bed. Mr. Leonard was a compositor on the old Gazette for twenty three years, and after its consolidation with the Commercial he remained twelve more years in the newspaper business there. He left the Commercial about ten years ago and went to work for the Globe-Wernecke Company, at the time of his death being an employee in the printing shop in the eighth street plant of that concern. The decedent is survived by his wife. He was an Odd Fellow, and that fraternity will have charge of the funeral services at his residence at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. DEATH OF A FORMER BATAVIAN
John W Leonard, formerly of this place died at his home in Cincinnati on Thursday June 11, 1908 in the 72d year of his age, He learned type-setting in this office about 1853, and went to Cincinnati in 1855, where he secured employment on the Gazette, on which paper he worked until it was merged with the Commercial, continuing with the new firm making a continuous service of more than forty years. He was noted for his steadiness and reliability as well as for his skill as a workman. He was a brother of the late James Leonard, of this place and was held in high esteem by our older citizens, and all who knew him. He leaves a widow and a considerable relationship. His friends from Batavia attended his funeral which took place in Cincinnati last Thursday. Interment was in Spring Grove Cemetery. Submitted by Nancy E. Davis.
