WILLIAM JESSE ELLIS BIOGRAPHY
 

WILLIAM JESSE ELLIS
  was born April 5,1845 at Batavia, Clermont County, Ohio. He was the first born of JOHN SAMUEL ELLIS (born 01 May 1822 in North Carolina, d. Oct. 13, 1906 at Evansville, Indiana) and MARIA LEONARD (b. 02 July 1825, at Batavia Ohio d. 26 July 1849 at Batavia, Ohio) John and Maria had issue of two sonsWilliam Jesse and HENRY LE ALDAS.Maria died of Cholera when they were four and five years old. Their father later married MARTHA ELIZA PAVEY on 21 Feb 1850 at  Highland County, Ohio

William Jesse came to Mt. Vernon with his parents in 1859/60 when he was fifteen years old, and as a young man he worked with his father on their farm.

On October 04, 1871, William Married HARRIET ELIZABETH WILEY (b.01 April 1852 in Cass Co. Illinois)

They had issue of five children two of whom died at a very young age of Diphtheria.

WILLIAM EDGER ELLIS was born (03 Dec 1874 at Mt Vernon, Illinois)
WALTER HARWOOD ELLIS was born (12 Sept 1877 at Mt Vernon, Illinois)
CHARLES ARTHUR ELLIS was born ( 08 Dec 1883 at Mt Vernon, Illinois d. 17 Jan 1889

STELLA ELIZABETH ELLIS  was born (23 March 1886 at Mt Vernon, Illinois, d. 19 Jan 1889 at St Louis, Missouri of Diphtheria.

William had moved his family to St Louis in 1886 to take a position with B NUGENT & BROTHERS GENERAL STORE. They remained there until 1896 when he returned to Mt Vernon to engage in a grocery business of his own  accord; however, it was not successful and he sold out.

Shortly thereafter, he took a fall which eventually resulted in his death. Harriet was with him when he died. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt Vernon, Illinois.

William was a member of Company C, Sixth Illinois Infantry and stayed until the close of the rebellion. After he mustered out of the service he worked as a salesman with the STRATTON, FERGUSON & CO,  The PAVEY & ALLEN CO., and J. D. JOHNSON & CO.

William belonged to the Coleman Post G.A.R. and Marion Lodge I.O.O.F.
